Next month Binnowee Kindergarten celebrates an incredible 90 years of shaping young minds in Sydney’s Hills District. Established in 1935 by Miss Winifred Macourt Binnowee began as a small preschool in a private home, set against the backdrop of open farmland where horses and carriages were still a common sight.
Over the decades, as the area evolved into a thriving suburb, Binnowee remained a steadfast presence, adapting to the changing needs of local families while maintaining its strong educational values.
The preschool moved to its current location on New Line Road in 1956, where it has since flourished as a fully operational early learning center. The name “Binnowee,” derived from the Dharug language, meaning “a green place” or “a place of many birds,” reflects its commitment to providing a nurturing and natural learning environment for generations of children.
Today, Binnowee Kindergarten is governed by families and community members ensuring a community-first approach to education.
